Marine Science Research Leaning Center
In April of 2010, HIMB opened the new Marine Science Research Learning Center, where our marine education curriculum is taught. The center is designed as a laboratory-classroom, equipped with student laptops, digital microscopes, and associated scientific equipment and supplies. Students have quick access to field sites, being just footsteps away from the shoreline of Moku o Lo‘e.
The center is fully integrated with a sophisticated audio-visual system, high resolution ELMO projector and high speed internet, where HIMB faculty and staff teach hands-on scientific inquiry curriculum developed by educational specialists and scientific researchers from the institute. HIMB also hosts related marine education programs and workshops in collaboration with partner organizations.
Construction of the center was funded by the Harold K. L. Castle Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the Emmett R. Quady Foundation. Additional contributions were made from a Department of Agriculture Grant to our beloved colleague the late Dr. Kakkala Gopalakrishnan from the University of Hawai‘i's Honolulu Community College and Brett Hill Construction, Inc.
